# Generating a key
After installing ssh, we recommend generating an ECDSA (elliptic crypto key)
ssh-keygen -t ECDSA
This will ask for a password to encrypt the private key.
**It is very very important that you save this password somewhere safe but easy to retrieve. If you lose it, you will have to generate a new key pair**
This will put the public and private key in your `.ssh` folder
- `id_ed25519` # your private key, password protected
- `id_ed25519.pub` # your public key
